Beat Stress with these 3 tips

As the holiday season kicks in, the stress levels tend to rise. Here are some ways you can stop stress in its tracks and keep calm even through long lines at the supermarket.

#1 SLEEP

Sleep keeps us healthy. By getting a full nights sleep, you’ll be able to shut your fight or flight mechanism off and maneuver smoothly through your day. For women, sleep is entirely important as its vital for hormone balance. Without sleep, we experience symptoms such as brain fog and mood swings. Anyone can be short tempered if they do not get enough sleep.

A lack of sleep causes irritability, weight gain, depression, and can even increase the risk for heart disease. What if you cannot get as much sleep as you are supposed to? Take a nap. Naps are a great way to catch up on sleep and are proven to be effective giving us that added boost to finish our day strong. Short naps throughout the day also help improve memory, this may come in handy when you forgot your shopping list at home.

Studies also show that naps can help us focus more and improve our creativity and responsiveness. This means an increase in our performance, be that at work or on the road when we’re driving.

#2 FRESH PRESSED JUICES & RAW FOOD

Those expensive green cocktails! Not everyone's a fan but fresh pressed juices will help you bulldoze your way through the holidays with not a single worry in sight. Raw foods and juices are high in enzymes. What are enzymes? An enzyme is a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. Enzymes help break down the foods you eat as well as increase nutrition delivery in your body. Lets say you ate a heavy meal and you didn’t have a lot of vegetables to accompany it or you didn’t eat this meal with a salad.

What happens? Your body might need more time to break down these foods and you might lack amounts of enzymes to correctly break down lets say for example the carbohydrates you ate. This action might cause your cells to stress. If your cells are stressed, chances are you too are stressed. Enzymes also help purify your blood, rebuild and regenerate tissue, effective detoxification and strengthen your immune system. Without enzymes, our cells die off. It’s really important to include enzymes in our meals. A plant based diet or regular consumption of raw vegetables and fresh pressed juices will ensure less cortisol is released and keep the stress levels down.

The best way I found is to start your day with a delicious green juice. If you have a Juicer at home, wipe the dust off of it and try making Apple, Celery, Lemon. This is one of my favorites. Cilantro, Lemon, Ginger, Cucumber, Parsley is another great one. You can also add to the mix romaine salad or arugula.

#3 LAVENDER OR CHAMOMILE

These two calming plants are the key to relaxing. After a long day, you might experience trouble shutting your brain off. In an overstimulated environment such as the one we live in, shutting off is difficult. Try incorporating taking baths or showers with these essential oils. We have a blend called RELAX.

It will help you shut off and send signals to calm your nervous system. You can mix our RELAX essential oil blend with olive oil and massage your feet at night. This will help get you to sleep faster as well as experiencing a more peaceful sleep. You can also use this blend and rub a little on your neck or wrist as I find this helps when I am shopping to remind me stay present so I avoid making multiple trips to the supermarket.

With that said, we wish you a lovely holiday season and please remember to not let Stress take over your life.

How to detox using Swedish Bitter

How to detox using Swedish Bitter

Today I want to talk about detoxing with Swedish Bitter. Swedish Bitter, as you may know, is a old recipe from the 1500's. It was first produced by paracelsus and then later discovered by Maria Treben.

If you don't know who Maria Treben is, I will make a video later going more detail into the history of Swedish Bitter.

I use Swedish Bitter to detox, in fact my entire family uses Swedish Bitter. Swedish Bitter is composed of mainly 19 rare yet bitter herbs. It's a very bitter formula, and thats one of the things that makes it so special. Bitter compounds are almost obsolete in our diet nowadays and this we can began to understand when our digestion loses its efficiency. Meaning, we tend to gain weight quickly or having a upset stomach becomes more frequent.

These are just some of the things we will experience when we have a lack of bitter foods in our diet. Another example is sugar cravings, this is a result of eating low to no amounts of bitter foods. I use Swedish Bitter in the spring, right around this time. It's possible for me to start my Swedish Bitter detox regimen right after Christmas. This is the time we eat heavier foods as well as experience overeating.

How to get started: I take 1tbs of Swedish Bitter in 8-12 ounces of water in the morning on a empty stomach. In the evening I repeat this step. Just to give you a heads up, Swedish Bitter is bitter and it might take sometime before getting used to the taste.

If you are having trouble drinking Swedish Bitter with plain spring water, I would suggested adding 1 tablespoon of Swedish Bitter to a glass or orange juice and or cup of tea. If you are worried about the content of alcohol in swedish bitter, I would suggest adding 1tablespoon of Swedish Bitter to a cup of tea. Make sure the water is hot, this is going to help evaporate and dissolve the alcohol.

There are some swedish bitters on the market that use aloe vera but aloe vera and water cannot extract the information from the plants that are needed to address your digestive complaints. Therefore, we make the recipe exactly how it is supposed to be made.

You can take Swedish Bitter mornings and evenings for 3 - 6 weeks. After this, you will need to take a break. I would give it a week and then you can continue with your detox regimen if you like the results.

Digestive Complaints

If you have experience trouble digesting your food. You can take Swedish Bitter 30 minutes before you eat. This helps your body produce the necessary enzymes to help break down your food. You can do this everyday before you eat. 1tbs of Swedish Bitter in water and drink it. You do not have to drink it fast.

I Ate Too Much It happens!

If you have eaten too much and your body is struggling to digest the food you have given it. You can take a 1 tbs of Swedish Bitter and add it to 4 - 6 fl.oz of water. I wouldn't suggest to drink too much water. Give Swedish Bitter a chance to start helping to break down your food and then you can drink more water.

Thats it, these are some ways I use Swedish Bitter in the Springtime to help detox my body. In result, my body feels more alert, I eat less, and exercise more. If you have any questions or want to share how Swedish Bitter has been helping you, feel free to leave a comment or email us.

Why Bitter foods are Important to eat

Why Bitter foods are Important to eat

Bitter substances found in bitter foods make hormonal and immunological changes. The hunger for sweets and energy and metabolic disorders we see today are enormously influenced by bitter substances.

Have you ever noticed why your sugar cravings don't go away? And how bothered you get if you don't get your sugar fix? The hunger for sweets doesn't only occur when you've been sitting at the computer for long amounts of time or when you are bored. It occurs because it's a hormonal imbalance and if not corrected, you'll constantly crave sugar. Here's how to change that.

Start eating bitter foods. While this sounds doable, a lot of bitter compounds are close to non-existent due to them being cultivated out of our foods. You could include more dandelion leaves, radishes, angelica root, and green lettuce in your diet. I found that most of our customers don't have time or it was simply too challenging to sit there and eat an entire bowl of salad with dandelion leaves in them especially if what they were eating was bitter.

So here's a solution, a bitter preparation. Bitters are not only for cocktails, you can get a bitter preparation made of bitter compounds. We manufacture one the best selling bitters on the market, its called Swedish Bitter. Swedish Bitter is a herbal preparation that promotes digestion. The stimulation of the bitter receptors creates immunological hormonal cascades. This is what the latest research has shown and this is where the latest research meets the traditional Chinese medicine, which has always described it this way. Bitter substances, for example, has traditionally been used to detoxify the liver in cases of fatigue and also has an effect on the heart meridian in Chinese medicine. These bitter substances are increasingly absent from our food today, although they would ideally support detoxification.

The best known effect of bitter compounds is the influence on digestion. According to the latest findings, there are not only taste receptors on the tongue but also in the intestine and here bitter substances stimulate the hormone and immune system including assisting the body's process to create digestive enzymes. However, bitter substances have an influence on the whole body far beyond the digestive tract. Positive effects are also known on the nervous system, the cardiovascular system and the balance of acid in the body.

Our dietary habits have changed considerably.

Burger and fries, burritos, pizza, and fried food. How many of you have eaten one of these items in the last week more than twice? Even small children quickly get used to sweet, salty, and colorful junk food. Today, food is more of an artificial product than a natural food. I often find that sick people have lost their sense of what would be good for them.

Sugar is an addiction and its everywhere.

Most items I pick up at the store have too much sugar in them. Too much sugar can be harmful for your entire body. The U.S. has a rising rate of Type 2 Diabetes. What we don't talk about much is the link from sugar to candida yeast and the body's inability to keep its correct pH. Acidification and chronic inflammation are linked to high sugar intake.

Better health is on the way.

Nowadays it doesn't take much time to find the right solutions for our health. With a little research, we can find what best fits into our regimen. It's the same for our Swedish Bitters, after taking it just once - you'll be on your way to better health. When you feel a need for sweets, when you have a headache, when you feel stressed or have been working on the computer for a long time, take our bitters and wait to see what happens.

How to use and how often.

Bitter substances are recommended for all people to maintain their health. Bitter substances are traditionally used to treat digestive problems, headaches and the hunger for sweets.

For well-being and digestive complaints: add 1-2 droppers or 1tsp to 1tbs to juice, water or tea before or after meals.

Other benefits customers reported after using our bitters are: detoxification, weight loss, quit smoking, increased energy, treatment of acid reflux or heart burn, pain reduction, increased absorption of nutrients and blood sugar stabilization.

Are air fresheners toxic?

Are air fresheners toxic?

TOXIC! Yes! Not only are they toxic for you and your family but also for your four legged friends. Cats and dogs, just like humans, also have lungs and we are creating a toxic environment for them if we are using air fresheners. What kind of air fresheners am I referring to? Read below.

PLUG-IN air fresheners are TOXIC

Plug out your PLUGIN’s because they may be making you sick. Plugin air fresheners contain hundreds of chemicals that are carcinogenic. Carcinogens cause cancer, for example in some studies carcinogens cause kidney and testicular cancer in Rats.  Some of the main name brand Plug-in's include Glade, and Air Wick.

Just think about it for a second. Which one of these examples sounds not acceptable?

Option #1 emitting (scentless but toxic) chemicals into the air
Option #2 emitting (scented but toxic) chemicals into the air
Option #3 All of the above

What if the chemicals we are emitting into the air smell good but still toxic? Is that okay? No, the reason why is because they are concentrated toxic formulas. Imagine having these plugin air fresheners, most people have more than one plugged in at a time. If you have a plugin and all the doors are closed and you come home, you are surrounded in a chemical stew and this is how many health problems develop such as infertility, breathing problems, bronchitis, cancer, headaches, nausea, nerve damage, neurological damage, increase risk of Alzheimers, and much more.

Febreeze air freshener is TOXIC

Do you ever wonder why certain smells can stay so long in a room? Did you know the longer these scents linger, the more toxic they are? Febreeze is one of these great examples. You can cover up the smell of old socks, dirty laundry, dirty mattresses, and mold. There are many who use Febreeze to “freshen up” their car, the carpet, THE AIR. That’s right, what is the main selling point of Febreeze? It’s to freshen up the air. If you need fresh air, you should try opening your door, bedroom window, balcony, etc.. What you should not do is spray chemicals in your air and pollute your body, there's enough pollution outside already. Your lungs will be happy if you just decide to actually get some “fresh air”. Take a walk around the block, jog, or do a breathing exercise. There are many ways to get fresh not stale but fresh air into your body.

Paraffin Candles are TOXIC

Candles are lovely, aren’t they? They spark something in us. We LOVE candles. The flame, the color, the smell, and the environment it creates — it’s just magical. Only issue, all candles are not created equally. Paraffin is the most used wax in candle making worldwide because its cheap to make, burns nicely, and neutrality. Fact is, Paraffin is toxic. When you light a candle made with Paraffin, it creates two chemicals called benzene and toluene. These two chemicals are carcinogens. Combine benzene, toluene, and your highly scented candle (ingredient: parfum) and you have your self a carcinogen cocktail. If you absolutely need candles, try steering towards beeswax or coconut wax candles.

Other example of toxic air fresheners

There are many types of air fresheners. For example Air Wick and Glade also make air fresheners with the option of an aerosol can or sprayer. These are also toxic and should be eliminated from the household.

Are air refreshers toxic for babies or pets?

Yes, any potent chemical going into the air is toxic for a newborn, baby, or pet. It’s important to keep the household neutral to encourage normal growth development for your child.

Are cold showers good for your immune system?

Are cold showers good for your immune system?

Cold showers, yes! You may be wondering what’s so special about a cold shower? Oh, wait. Before I get into the benefits of a cold shower, I should explain how I came about this subject.

Well, it all started a couple of years ago, in my early 20’s to be exact. We shared a household in Austria with my mum-in-law and although water is abundant, “warm” water was scarce.

We have water boilers in Austria to heat up the water, kind of like here in the U.S. but the difference is, we have a limit of how much warm or hot water the boilers supply. For example, we had a 100 Liter water boiler at the time. 100 Liters is a lot of water, when you think about it. You don’t need 100 Liters of warm water to take a shower but if there is a larger household 3 people + including dishwashing and floor mopping, 100 L is not sufficient at all. In fact, there were many times when I prepared for a shower at night and was left with cold water. My mum-in-law loved using hot water and always forgot to reduce her use when we came back to Austria to visit.

That led me to get used to taking cold showers. (Insert Smiley Face here) I was not that happy to greet cold water at night especially in the winter. With -1 C degrees outside, its the last thing you think of bathing with cold water. Curious, I wanted to know what temperature our water was. You won’t believe it, our water has an average of 8 degrees C. Time went by and I taking cold showers grew on me. I have taken so many cold showers, that it is no longer cold for me. Yes of course its cold, but it does not bother me or make me shiver.

1. Cold showers create beautiful skin

Cold water closes your pores, making your skin and hair more resistant to external influences such as heat and friction.

2. Cold showers strengthen the immune system

A Netherland study of 3000 willingly volunteers. One group was told to take a cold shower for 30 seconds, the second group for 60 seconds and the third group for 90 seconds. Lastly, the fourth group was told to take a hot shower. The results: 1/3 of group 1, 2, and 3 had less reportings of the flu and common cold and therefore had a stronger immune system.

3. Cold showers help with depression and mental health

Raise your hand if you would willingly jumps in a cold lake or take a cold shower? Not many of us, right? That’s just the point, facing fears and conditioning your brain to be okay with change. That first step, its literally just that. For some of us, it takes a while to overcome small challenges and adapt to new changes. Whenever you want to achieve something, you must be able to jump into cold water. Yes this can be painful and a little uncomfortable but it' so worth it. Psychologist have proved training your brain to master the small unpleasant situations in your life and this in return will change your entire life. Not enthusiastic?

4. Cold showers help the body recover quicker after partaking in sports activities

Ice baths are used often by athletes to present sore muscles after a hard workout and to shorten breaks between training sessions. If you don’t have a bathtub and access to pounds of ice, you can benefit just the same by taking a cold shower.

5. Cold showers helps reduce weight (thermogenesis)

Weight Loss with Shivering

Shivering turns on the so called brown fat. There are two kinds of fat in the body, Brown Fat Cells and White Fat Cells. Brown Fat Cells contain much mitochondria and help burn extra calories. White Fat Cells are fat cells that get stored in the body after the body receives too much energy. White Fat Cells have the ability to be turned into Brown Fat Cells.

When Brown Fat Cells get turned on by being in cold temperatures and shivering, they then directly produce energy in the brown adipose tissue. Those who are regularly exposed to cold climates automatically and easily produce heat. This means when the body is often trained to be in cold water or cold weather, it will take longer for the body to start to shiver. The reason, the metabolism is high and therefore has many brown fat cells that are supplying the body with heat. When the body does not have a sufficient amount of heat it will then start to shiver to make up for the lost warmth and to protect the organs.

What temperature does your body start burning fat?
Your body activates brown cells at 60 degrees.

6. Cold showers reduces stress, improve sleep and give a small spike in testosterone

This is especially good news for the guys. Cold showering can increase testosterone levels. Testosterone helps with motivation and helping to have a more positive outlook, in return helps with depression. With an increase in self confidence, comes better sleep and reduced stress.

What happens when the body comes in contact with cold water?

The blood vessels start to narrow, allowing more blood to flow into the body and less into the arms, legs and skin. This is a smart mechanism the body takes on to protect the inner organs. Secondly, the body turns on its heat by allowing the muscles to shiver, this fast vibrating reaction releases 30% warmth into the body, the other 70% heat is loss. When you shiver, your body uses waste as energy.

Other cold water activities to participate in include kneipping, walking barefoot in cold snow, rubbing snow on the body in the wintertime, swimming in a partial frozen lake, and ice baths.

How to start benefiting from cold showers?

According to experts, to allow your body to adjust without overcooling yourself, you should start with cold water on the feet. This method includes allowing cold water to run on the feet for 30 seconds and afterwards dry the feet well and directly put on socks. It’s important that you protect your body.

Second method:

Allow cold water to run on the feet for 30 seconds followed by 30 seconds of warm water. The warm water should be warm-hot not extremely hot. Follow the warm-hot water by cold water. Immediately after dry your feet and slip into warm socks.

Third method:

If you are ready, apply cold water up to the calf areas. You may allow your body to get used to the cold water on the legs and work your way up towards the abdomen until you can fully shower with cold water.

Dos and Donts

Do make sure to put warm clothes on after your cold shower. Preventing to do so in as a beginner can risk of getting a cold.

Don’t shower your head or ears in cold water, this puts you at risk for a cold. If you are shampooing your hair with cold water, add cold water quickly to hair under 15 seconds to be exact immediately dry and or blow-dry your hair to prevent sickness from occurring.

Don’t shower everyday extremely in cold water if you are beginner, this can result in an inflamed bladder and sickness such as a cold.

Bitter Break - Giving your liver a break for better digestion

Bitter Break - Giving your liver a break for better digestion

Giving your liver a break is easier than you think. Bitter foods are not everyones favorite but can be very beneficial to your health by keeping your liver functioning at its optimal level.

During the holidays we tend to eat more sugar. It is tempting, gingerbreads, cakes, and pies. But eating all of this sugar can cause our bodies to crave more sugar and makes our organs work harder. It’s like a non stop process. To halt this, we can incorporate more bitter foods which in return help to wipe our palette clean, rid sugar cravings, and simply give our liver a break.

So what bitter compounds can you eat or drink this season? Try juicing dandelions. Dandelions are super bitter but they are the best and can aid digestion by allowing your liver to make more bile. Bile is crucial for a happy digestion process. Bile is secreted by the liver. It’s job is to absorb and breakdown fats. All bitter compounds will stimulate bile production. While dandelions are really healthy, you’ll need to team them up with some additional vegetables like romaine lettuce, cucumber, spinach, one apple, and a little ginger. These fruits and vegetables will help to mask the bitterness. Bitter melon is also bitter. It kind of looks like a wrinkled cucumber. Bitter Melon is a popular eat among the asian community and can also be used for helping to regulate ones blood sugar. You can find it here in our Diabetes Tea.

You can also drink tea to receive your daily amount of bitter compounds. We make a catharsis tea, which is great for stimulating the digestive system. Although it's a bitter tea blend, it works great! I love this tea. It’s great for detoxing and convenient to have at home in the pantry. Not only does this tea help with digestion but it helps the glandular organs push out toxins. It’s primary ingredients are Dandelion Root and Leaf. This formulated tea also contains Birch which is good for purifying the blood and riding excess water. To join Birch is Elderflower. Elderflower is known for its immune system boosting abilities. Although Fresh fruits and veggies are the way to go, they can also be costly. Our catharsis tea offers a valuable way to get your share of bitter without the spoilage factor.

Cravings

Cravings tell you a lot about your eating. Some cravings for processed, sugary, and unhealthy foods might be a sign for the lack of greens and bitter foods in your diet. Excess sugar, processed foods, and simple carbohydrates make our digestion sluggish. When this happens, the body becomes overwhelmed, and starts to store excess fat. After you add more bitter foods to your diet, you’ll notice the cravings go away. Instead of eating that candy bar you usually love so much, you’ll notice you will crave healthier foods like a bowl of broccoli or a healthy salad.

Detox

The only option for a sluggish digestive system is to detox. Detoxing helps push excess toxins out of our bodies. Our bodies are amazing machines and already have the capability of refreshing itself and riding of things in our bodies that don’t have any value to it. It’s just when our body becomes sluggish that we need to give it a boost and help rid excess waste. When you are adding more bitter foods to your diet, you’re doing just that — Detoxing.

Bitter’s highs and lows

Dandelion and bitter melon are very bitter but there are some less obvious bitter foods that you might already be including in your diet. For example, endive, cacao powder, radishes, arugula, broccoli, kale, and spinach. These are some of the best bitter foods to eat.

Chronic digestive complications

The digestive disorders of today are mainly a result of two cases; lack of fiber and lack of bitter compounds. By adding more fiber and bitter substances into your diet, you can see an improvement in your digestion faster than you think.

Does your Lip Balm cause Cancer?

Does your Lip Balm cause Cancer?

Lip balms, everyone uses them, in fact daily. Especially when it’s cold outside, our lips become dry and then we reach often for a lip balm to protect our lips.

Not all lip balms are so to say “healthy”. In mainstream lip balms such as trusted brands; Carmex and Blistex contain questionable ingredients such as Mineral Oil and Mosh. Carmex has for example 31.7 % of Mosh and Blistex 30%.

What is MOSH?

Mosh stands for Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons. Hydrocarbons come from Crude Oil also known as Petroleum Oil. Mosh is a potential cancer causing ingredient and in fact is difficult for the body to dispose of says Dr. Konrad Grob, a Chemical Expert in Switzerland.

MOSH ingredient concentration rate

Carmex and Blistex use only on an average of 30% MOSH. It’s 1/3 of the ingredients contained in their lip balms/chapsticks. It cannot be that dangerous or? Wrong, MOSH can be dangerous especially in lip balms and chapsticks due to it’s high rate of consumption and entering the body through the mouth not to mention it’s accumulation rate.

European Food Safety Authority writes: "Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) comprise a diverse group of mixtures of hydrocarbons containing thousands of chemical compounds of different structures and size, derived mainly from crude oil but also produced synthetically from coal, natural gas and biomass. The chemical composition of most MOH mixtures is unknown and usually varies from batch to batch; specifications are often expressed in terms of viscosity, or ‘thickness’, as related to the applications of the products and not in terms of chemical composition. These highly complex mixtures have a wide variety of industrial and domestic uses. There are several possible sources of MOH in food: mainly food packaging materials, food additives, processing aids and environmental contaminants such as lubricants.

The potential human health impact of MOH varies widely; so-called ‘aromatic’ MOH may act as genotoxic carcinogens (that is they may damage DNA, the genetic material of cells, as well as cause cancer), while some ‘saturated’ MOH can accumulate in human tissue and may cause adverse effects in the liver. In the European Union, some low- and medium-viscosity MOH are authorised for use as food additives.” For more information visit: www.efsa.europa.eu/en/topics/topic/mineraloilhydrocarbons

So why is MOSH so bad even if its in a lip balm at small rates?

According to Dr. Konrad, when MOSH enters the body, the body changes it and then MOSH combines itself into clumps doubling its amount in the body. Firstly, MOSH is very difficult to breakdown says Dr. Konrad. The body tries to dispose of the ingredient but it cannot. The result, MOSH, a by product of crude/petroleum oil stays in the body. Experts show that MOSH tends to build up in certain body parts like the Spleen, Liver, and Lymph Nodes. So after day by day and year by year use of lip balms containing mineral oil hydrocarbons, the amount in your body will be quite large, putting you at risk of DNA damage and maybe even cancer.

So what to do?

Discontinue your use of lip balms containing these “questionable ingredients”. Cancer causing ingredients are only needed in small amounts to cause disruption in the body. At first this may come to you as a shock especially if you have been using brands such as Carmex and Blistex. Even Chapstick brand contains ingredients such as mineral oil and methylparaben. Paraben is another BAD ingredient and often found in tumors in women. Try switching over to natural lip balms without any mineral containing ingredients. You’ll lips will be softer, taken care of, and you can feel good about your change to a healthier you.

Check out our variety of lip balms, there’s something for everyone. Our lip balms contain high quality all natural ingredients, NO paraffins, NO mineral oil, NO parabens.

Grandma's home remedies

Remedies are very popular because they work. Best of all, you can relieve annoying symptoms such as runny nose and cough in a natural way.

Most ingredients such as onions, vinegar and salt, we usually always have at home because they are the basic ingredients of everyday cooking. Why waste money on buying chemicals at the pharmacy, try it with the following home remedies:

Inhalation

Inhalation is a very good remedy against a runny nose, coughs, and hoarseness. To do this, add a few drops of chamomile oil and or Eucalyptus to a pot of hot water that has just finish boiling or pour into a bowl over boiling water. Use caution.

Then just keep your head over the steam, cover with a towel and inhale the vapors. Please make sure to close your eyes to avoid irritation. The moist heat causes mucus in the bronchi and sinuses. Instead of the oil you can use a tablespoon of medicinal quality thyme or chamomile flowers.

Tea

Tea made from elderflowers, peppermint and ginger has a particularly beneficial effect on the inflamed throat and also reduces fever. Brew your batch. In addition three to four slices of ginger can be added to the brew. For a calming and antibacterial effect hyssop tea may be drank.

Ginger Tea

ginger rootGinger has a warming effect and triggers therapeutic sweating. The inconspicuous root contains the pungent shogaols and relieves cough. In addition, ginger has a slight antibacterial effect against colds and helps with sore throat and chills. When experiencing a cold, drink ginger tea every three to four hours. Take three slices of ginger in hot water for a total of 10 minutes.

Heated Mustard Bath

Heated mustard baths help to correct colds. Above all, colds and headaches are relieved. 150 to 200 grams of mustard may be added in warm water to relax. The bath duration: 10 to 15 minutes. As soon as it tingles on the skin, you'd better get out of the tub. Be sure to rinse the remains of the mustard thoroughly with warm water. In the morning and evening, a mustard foot bath can be taken. To do this, stir in three tablespoons of mustard powder, pour three liters of hot water in a designated foot bath tub or sturdy plastic bowl. If the comfort temperature of heat is reached, bathe your feet in it for about ten minutes. Cover the head with a towel, this increases the heat in the head and body. When bath duration is over, rinse feet thoroughly with warm water.

Vinegar Wraps

A Vinegar Wrap is used traditionally with a fever. For a liter or 33 ounces of cold water add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (try to obtain organic apple cider vinegar, Trader Joes has a reasonably priced bottle), soak towels with this solution, and wrap around the calves. Remove the towel as soon it has warmed to body temperature. Three to four procedures will usually suffice to bring the body back.

Quark Poultice

Quark Poultice (Farmer cheese polutice), this is another remedy I learned from my friend from Bavaria. It relieves sore throats and helps with hoarseness. For the cold (not refrigerator cold) layer curd a quarter inch thick on a compress and wrap from the sides. Place the package containing the single-layer side of the neck. You can remove the wrap about 15 minutes later - or until the curd has dried. Quark or Topfen is the German and Austrian name for Farmer Cheese. Check your local Mom & Pop, Russian or Amish shops for Farmer Cheese. American Cottage cheese is not the same.

Onion Juice

Onion Juice may loosen up tenacious mucus in the bronchi. For every 100 grams of chopped onions and rock candy, honey, or raw agave, boil until the sugar dissolves. Allow to cool then strain the juice. Take a tablespoon daily.

Chicken Soup

Nasal Irrigation

Swedish Bitter

Lastly, Swedish Bitter, a common tincture used since the middle ages can be used for colds and fevers. 1 tablespoon is to be given internally. For external, use a compress over inflamed throat to address complaints of sore and hoarseness. To read more about Swedish Bitter see here.

Health benefits of Marshes or Moor

Health benefits of Marshes or Moor

Moor, fen, marsh, or a swamp; they are the most healing and beneficial bodies of water.

Those muddy looking waters, who would want to jump into that? Well, after I clarify how healing and beneficial these moors and marshes can be, I guarantee you'll want to hop in.

What is it?

A moor/marsh/swamp/bog is a special wet habitat that often appear in valleys or slopes. They are characterized by a severe runoff of water and their floors are made up of mostly air and oxygen. No water equals no marsh. Everywhere in the world where there is sufficient water and the climate allows peat-forming vegetation, a moor may arise. Moors or marshes contain decomposed plant material such as leaves, branches and bark from the nearby grounds and forests. After decomposition occurs, rich carbon substances form leaving these bodies of water rich with minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron.

In the 19th century it was discovered that peat is the composition of beautiful half destroyed mosses, marsh grasses, leaves, heath dainty flowers, buds, stems, twigs, and many other sea and land plants. After the end of the last Ice Age, when the climate gradually warmed up again, moors began to create themselves as more ice began melting combining with heaping amounts of rainfall. Thus, through these happenings, moors began to form giving the right environment for moisture loving plants to flourish. For example, 12,000 years ago the evidence was found to acknowledge the beginning of moors forming in Europe.

Moors come in variety

There are a variety of moors. For example a high-moor or raised moor. A high-moor, is mainly composed of rainwater. These moors occur in regions where there is sufficient rainfall all year around. These appropriate conditions fall in atlantic climates. These types of moors have a poor balance of oxygen and minerals, and it's pH is quite acidic. Sphagnum, a type of peat moss is more prevalent in the high-moor because of its Characteristics of high water and low oxygen content making the peat moss species production greater. Moors grow gradually every year by 1 millimeter.

High-moors are perfect locations for rare plant species and refuge for many endangered species. Since high-moors are mostly fed by rainwater and not by ground water.

Low-moor or Fen

Fens can form when they are supplied by both rain and ground water. This combination ensures that the moor will be quite rich in nutrients. These types of moors are created from silted lakes and ponds. Due to the abundance of the nutrient-dense conditions, they provide favorable conditions for individual species and animal populations. Something to look out for to determine what kind of moor you are visiting. Look out for these types of species; reeds, cattails, rushes, alder forests, or buckthorn bushes.

In special conditions where climate change is occurring and more steady rainfall in increasing a fen can develop into a high-moor. This is called a transitional moor. In order for this to take place, the peat moss must compress itself allowing more groundwater to come in. Since rainwater yields no nutrients, Sphagnum begins to take over thus turning into a high-moor.

What can moor do for you?

What possibly can this Black Gold do for you? In medicine and science, mud has been proven to be healing for over 200 years now. Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs have used mud for the alleviation of disease. Active substances in moors have proven helpful including the elimination of harmful substances and toxic chemicals. They also activate hormones and have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body.

Moor is promising some positive effects on those experiencing the following: Rheumatism, degenerative diseases of joints and spine, arthritis, musculoskeletal disorders, osteoporosis, sports rehabilitation, treatment of fractures, post-treatment after surgery such as intervertebral disc surgery, artificial hip and knee joints, etc., lumbar disc damage, sciatica, chronic. Prostate problems, hormonal disorders gout, healing of scars in the abdominal and pelvic cavity after surgery, skin diseases, disorders of the autonomic nervous system, stress, metabolic and gastrointestinal diseases

What if I do not have a moorlake near me? What can I do?

According to research, swimming in a moor-lake does a body good but you can also take mud baths. These baths will promise to naturally warm up your body up to two degrees higher than your normal temperature thus acting as a fever. If you do not have a moorlake or marsh near you, mud packs can be bought online. If you live on the east coast of the united states, the Adirondacks has some beautiful clean marshes to swim in.

My experience

After one visit in the moorlake with a duration of 30 minute swim time, I noticed shortly thereafter smoother glowing skin. I also noticed the mosquito bites on my beloveds legs were less noticeable, in fact the healing process had increased. These bites were no longer a sore red color but rather a beige color. That night we could not sleep. It was as if we had too much energy stored up in our body, for example like a small child.

Unexplainable.

Many of us caught chickenpox as children and those unexplainable bumps that still remain is exactly what I experienced until I jumped into the moorlake. From research, this bump left over from chickenpox is mainly composed of scar tissue. Over the years I have tried to heal this bump but it never wanted to leave me. A day later I noticed this bump was rather itchy and had decreased in size. Two days later the bump is no longer a noticeable bump but its quite flat and has formed an opening in the skin. Today is the third day and its pretty much healed itself. So there you go, thats quite impressive. If you believe in nature, nature believes in you.

Whats responsible for the increased healing process?

Humic Acid and lignins including the versatile ingredients in the moor, help with skin diseases like; shingles, herpes psoriases, and eczema. For example, they improve the regeneration of the skin and accelerate the reproduction process of individual skin cells. They are responsible for the healing of my chickenpox scar. Chickenpox is a type of herpes and once you had chickenpox, the virus stays dormant within your body. Humic Acid and its anti-viral properties has the ability to capture viruses and destroy it. Humic Acid in the moor is also responsible for stimulating circulation in the upper layer of the skin. Furthermore, the skin is cleansed, toned, and more resilient. The fats, waxes, and resins partially overlap on the skin thereby also increasing the firmness and elasticity of the skin.

Humic Acid and its properties

  • anti-inflammatory - humic acid attacks the invading germs and neutralizes them, they can not continue to spread
  • antiviral - The humic acid attacks the structure of viruses and binds the virus destroyed the rest in a Humin-net. ( i.e. Shingles, herpes I)
  • antitoxic - neutralized by active ionization toxic poisons
  • bacteriostatic - helps kill the bacteria and doesn't allow the bacteria to multiply

Build a Insect Hotel

Building a insect hotel is fun and educational, especially for the kids.

Kids learn about different insects and what types of houses they prefer to live in. In addition, insects need nesting sites so they can lay their eggs and in return they help pollinate our fruit trees and flowers. For example, the carpenter bee. Carpenter bees are often mistaken for a bumble bee because of their similar appearance. The carpenter bee is an important pollinator of many open-faced flowers such as the Scarlet globe mallow, california poppy, evening primrose, and the water star grass. The carpenter bee likes to live in holes in wood logs and dwellings. Carpenter bees make nests by tunneling into wood. The female is in charge of making the nests. Carpenter bees do not actually eat wood but they use the wood pieces to make walls inside the tunnels of their nest. Although carpenter bees can cause some trouble if you have a wood house. Instead of fighting them, encourage another place to live and make them a insect hotel in your garden. This way, you'll have a beneficial relationship as the carpenter bee will help pollinate your fruits and vegetables.
See on this page two different types of insect hotels. One triangular and one square insect hotel made slightly different but serve the same purpose. The sizes of the holes inside the wood logs make it easier for insects of various sizes to penetrate through them. The holes signify a potential home for a insect. Once the insect is comfortable, usually the female will start to make a nest. Different types of wood, sticks, and clay are used to host a variety of beneficial insects. Usually the wood used in insect hotels tend to be in the most natural form clear from any chemicals such as staining or paints.
Sticks, and reeds can be collected from a nearby marsh or pond. For bigger collections of these items, see your local forest and park ranger to obtain a a permit for permission to collect. Reeds are abound in areas near waterways or any area where there is water surfacing. Plywood can be purchased at your local lumber store or you can use old wood from a drawer, cabinet, or scraps from an old project. Wood logs, both circle and square, can also be obtained at your local outdoor home and garden store. If you have nearby wood farmers, you can barter or buy from them. I imagine random logs of wood can be found in your local forest or hills but if a bigger amount is required, you should talk to your local ranger for permission to collect. Air bricks have holes in them to allow small sticks and reeds to be inserted in them. Air bricks can be found at your local outdoor home and garden store. Lastly, clay. Clay is added to fill up a hollow aluminum can or hollow wood frames making it easier to plug in sticks and reeds. Clay can also be added under the roof of the insect hotel. Clay plays a special role in a insect hotel as certain insects are attracted to clay and dirt because it's their natural habitat. For example, mud dauber wasps use clay to make their nests. How to detox using Swedish Bitter

How to detox using Swedish Bitter

"
